What work pays, and what it costs your body

Pay is public. The wear is not on the payslip. Both belong in the same table.

Pay is public and the wear is not, so most career advice discusses one and gestures at the other. Put them in the same table and the trade stops being a mood. The best-paying work in this set is mostly physically easy and time-expensive; the physically hardest work sits in the middle of the pay range and takes its price out of your knees instead.

Every wage figure below is a national median from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational wage survey, with the second figure the ninetieth percentile — the strong end of the occupation, not the outlier who founded something. Pay from BLS OEWS, May 2024 national. Outlook from BLS employment projections, 2025-35. Qualitative scores are editorial estimates, compiled 2026.

What the top of the pay range looks like

Highest national median pay in the set, with what the work costs. Physical demand and hours burden are editorial scores, 0–100.
VocationMedianStrong endPhysicalHoursYears
Physician (Primary Care)$238k$381k458211
Airline Pilot$227k$363k35706
Dentist$173k$220k55628
Lawyer (Litigation)$151k$215k10857
Air Traffic Controller$145k$210k15724
Data Engineer$136k$210k8554
Software Engineer$133k$211k8554
Game Developer$133k$211k8705

Average physical demand across those eight is 23 out of 100. Average hours burden is 69. That is the shape of the bargain at the top of the wage distribution: the body is spared and the calendar is not. Nobody is paying $238k for a forty-hour week.

What the hardest physical work pays

Highest physical demand in the set, against pay.
VocationPhysicalMedianStrong end

Stonemason88$52k$83k
Market Farmer88$88k$157k
Arborist88$50k$79k
Livestock Rancher85$88k$157k
Wind Turbine Technician85$63k$88k

Around $67k at the median across those six. Solidly middle of this set, occasionally above it, and never near the top. The market does not price wear directly; it prices scarcity, licensure and liability. Physical work is paid well when it is also licensed, dangerous in a regulated way, or short of people — not because it is hard.

Good pay without a degree

The clearest arbitrage in the data is licensed and certificated work that pays like graduate work and trains like an apprenticeship.

Strong median pay reached through apprenticeship, certification or licensure rather than a four-year degree.

Wind Turbine Technician$63k$88k2No
Water Treatment Operator$58k$86k3Yes

Each of these has a named cost, and the costs are not interchangeable. Shift rotation and sustained vigilance in the control room and the tower. Ladders, heights and weather in the trades. Read the downside line on each record before the pay line.

The number nobody puts next to the salary

Years to competence is the real price of entry, and it is denominated in poor pay rather than tuition. Four years of apprentice wages is a genuine cost even when the training is free, and twelve years to an attending physician’s salary is a cost that the salary eventually repays and the twenties do not.

The ranking treats this as a factor you weight — time to skill — rather than a footnote. If you are thirty-eight, weight it at five and the long licensed tracks fall away on their own. If you are nineteen, weight it at one and let the twelve-year work compete fairly.

Where these numbers stop being true

They are national. A Software Engineer median means something different in a coastal metro than in a small city, and so does the rent that consumes it — which is a different analysis, at locationistics.com. Hours burden lands on people other than you, analysed at relationistics.com.

Common questions

Which jobs pay well without a degree?
Several licensed trades and skilled operations in this set reach a national median above the all-occupation median with an apprenticeship rather than a degree — air traffic control, power plant and water treatment operation, aircraft maintenance, and the electrical and mechanical trades among them. Each carries a body or hours cost shown alongside the figure.
Is a high salary worth the physical toll?
That is exactly the weighting the ranking asks you to set, not something a page can answer. What can be said is that the correlation is weaker than people assume: the highest-paying work in this set is mostly low physical demand and high hours burden, while the hardest physical work sits in the middle of the pay range.
What does median pay actually mean?
Half of people in that occupation earn more and half earn less, nationally. It is not a starting wage and not what you will earn in an expensive metro. The second figure on every record here is the 90th percentile — the strong end, not the outlier.
Do trades pay more than office work?
At the median the strong trades are competitive with much of salaried office work and beat the lower half of it. At the top decile most office and professional tracks pull ahead, because they scale through leverage while a trade scales through hours or a crew.
